Book Review: Crush

So, I needed to read something a little different and more light hearted after my previous book review, and I always read a poetry book after a novel.
Looking at my shelf, I immediately saw this book, and I knew it had to go on my TBR list.
“Crush" is an early collection of love poems by my cousin, Kwame Alexander.
This book gave me exactly what I was looking for: poetic forms, page-work, and refreshing, light subjects. I tend to gravitate to books like this after I have read something long and heavy, and “Crush” did not disappoint.
In this early collection of poetry, Kwame combines page play and poetic form to remind readers what love is really about. It has nothing to do with the body, but with accepting someone as who they are inside and cherishing each moment with them. As people read this book, they will see a few haikus, shorter poems, even a few surprises at the end. However, what they will find most is a breath of fresh air from the world.
“Crush” reminds readers to look at people as people, not as the latest tabloid, news headline, or even a possession.
I’m not sure if the book is still in circulation, but if you can get your hands on this collection, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed, especially if you’re looking for a little love in your life.
